New York has a wide variety of cocktails named after our great City. There’s the Manhattan, the Brooklyn, New York Lemonade, Harlem Nights, and even a drink called The Staten Island Ferry. And then there’s the ever popular, right to the point, New York Cocktail.
You know the old adage: When in Rome, do as the Romans. Well, here’s another: When in New York, always indulge in a New York cocktail.
Similar to a whiskey sour, but balanced with just the perfect amount of sweeteners, this is a drink, ever rising in popularity. Just start with great ingredients, and you’re on your way to a not too sweet, not too tart, perfectly balanced, adult beverage experience.
So, you can whip this classic drink up at home, and here are a few recipe variations for a successful, and delicious, New York Cocktail.
New York Cocktail Variation 1
- 2 ounces of Canadian Whiskey
- ¾ ounce of lime juice
- ½ ounce of simple syrup
- 1 tsp Grenadine syrup
Grab your cocktail shaker, fill it with ice and shake the ingredients until well chilled. Strain the mixture into an old-fashioned glass, filled with chipped ice, and garnish with a festive, and fresh, orange twist.
New York Cocktail Variation 2
- 2 ounces blended whiskey
- 1 ounce of lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon fine sugar
- ½ tsp grenadine
Pour the ingredients into a shaker filled with ice. Shake until chilled. Pour into your favorite cocktail glass and garnish with a fresh lemon twist.
Note: This version is a little less sweet than the first, but every bit as delicious. Remember, you can always adjust tart to sweet ratios to best suit your personal taste. Either way, this one will make you sing, New York, New York!

New York Sour
- 2 ounces of rye whiskey
- 1 ounce simple syrup
- 1 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 5 ounces of red wine
Shake all the ingredients in a shaker filled with ice. But hold back on the wine. Once chilled, strain the mixture into an iced cocktail glass.
